Shotgun-microfoon Sony ECM-778

The Sony ECM-778 is a compact shotgun microphone designed for high-sensitivity audio capture in video production and broadcasting environments. Its directional pickup pattern focuses on the primary sound source while reducing ambient noise, and the lightweight housing makes it suitable for camera mounting or use on a boom pole. The microphone is intended to deliver clear dialogue and natural sound reproduction in field and studio situations where precise source isolation is required.

Advantages

The ECM-778 combines a narrow, highly directional pickup with high sensitivity to capture speech and focused sounds clearly at a distance. Its compact and lightweight construction simplifies mounting on cameras or booms and reduces handling fatigue during extended shoots. The microphone's design helps minimize background noise and reverberation, providing intelligible audio for interviews, location recording, and broadcast applications.

Suitable for

• Run-and-gun video recording and ENG (electronic news gathering)
• On-camera dialogue capture for interviews and documentaries
• Boom-mounted location sound for film and television
• Field recording where directional isolation is needed

Key specifications

• Type: Compact shotgun / directional microphone
• Polar pattern: Highly directional (shotgun-style)
• Sensitivity: High sensitivity suitable for speech and dialogue capture
• Weight and form factor: Lightweight, compact body for camera or boom mounting
• Mounting: Compatible with camera shoe mounts and boom pole adapters (standard mounts)
• Intended use: Location recording, broadcasting, video production

How to use

Mount the microphone securely on a camera shoe or attach it to a boom pole using an appropriate shock mount to reduce handling noise. Aim the microphone's front toward the intended sound source and maintain an unobstructed line of sight from microphone to source for best directionality. When used with cameras or field recorders, set input gain according to device levels to avoid clipping while preserving dynamic range. For interview setups, place the microphone as close as practical to the subject without entering the frame, or use a boom operator to keep the microphone positioned above and slightly in front of the speaker.

Recommendations

To achieve optimal results, pair the ECM-778 with a low-noise preamp or camera input and employ a windscreen or blimp outdoors to reduce wind noise. Use a shock mount to limit vibration and handling artifacts, and check levels during rehearsals or sound checks to ensure clear, undistorted recordings.
