Explore Scientific O-III 6,5 nm 2 inch smalbandfilter

Explore Scientific O-III 6.5nm 2" narrowband filter isolates the doubly ionized oxygen (O-III) emission lines to improve contrast and detail when observing planetary nebulae and select emission nebulae. This 2-inch (50.8 mm) eyepiece/diagonal-mounted filter features a 6.5 nm full width at half maximum (FWHM) bandwidth that suppresses broadband skyglow and continuum light while transmitting the O-III lines, making it suitable for both visual observing and astrophotography with small- to medium-aperture telescopes.

Advantages

The O-III 6.5nm filter provides significant contrast improvement on O-III rich targets by sharply narrowing the transmitted band to the relevant emission wavelengths while blocking much of the surrounding light pollution and moonlight. Its 2-inch format allows direct use in eyepiece holders and star diagonals, offering convenience for switching between unaided and filtered views. The filter’s bandwidth balances transmission of the nebular lines with effective suppression of background sky, which benefits both visual perception and long-exposure imaging.

Suitable for

• Visual observation of planetary nebulae and compact emission nebulae
• Imaging nebulae where O-III emission is dominant or significant
• Use on 2" eyepiece holders, star diagonals, and visual/imaging setups with small- to medium-aperture telescopes

Key specifications

• Filter type: O-III (doubly ionized oxygen) narrowband
• Clear aperture: 2 inches (50.8 mm)
• Bandwidth (FWHM): 6.5 nm
• Mounting: 2" eyepiece/diagonal mount compatible
• Primary use: visual observing and astrophotography on appropriate targets

How to use

Insert the 2" O-III filter into a 2" eyepiece holder or star diagonal between the telescope and eyepiece. For visual use, allow your eyes a few minutes to adapt when switching to the filtered view to perceive increased nebular contrast. For imaging, secure the filter in the optical path and verify focus, as narrowband filters can shift optimal focus slightly compared with broadband views. Exposure times and processing should be adjusted to account for reduced overall flux when using the narrow 6.5 nm bandwidth.

Recommendations

Best results are achieved on nebulae with strong O-III emission such as planetary nebulae and portions of some emission nebulae. Use with moderate to dark skies or during moonlit nights to improve target contrast against skyglow. When imaging, combine with appropriate calibration frames and consider longer exposures or stacking to compensate for lower transmitted flux.
